Preventive and Hygiene Services

We are very proud to have an accomplished hygienist, Jeanne, to provide preventive and hygiene services for our patients. Jeanne has over 30 years of experience, has advanced professional training and is passionate about her work.

We provide exceptional routine care and more complex scaling and root planing when necessary. The gum tissues are an indicator of active disease. At each visit, we will do an evaluation of the tissue health, an oral cancer screening, examination for tooth pathology, x-rays as necessary, and tooth cleaning.

Long standing plaque will eventually calcify and turn into hard deposits called calculus (tartar). If this is not removed, it acts as an irritant to the tissues and leads to inflammation (sore gums, bleeding). Inflammation can ultimately cause loss of gum tissue and bone around the teeth. This in turn can lead to undesirable appearances, loose teeth and tooth loss. When the tartar forms below the gums, a scaling and root planing may be necessary. This type of cleaning requires a higher level of Jeanne’s expertise and may require multiple appointments. We do not recommend the overuse of toothpaste. Toothpastes contain considerable amounts of silica (sand) and are very abrasive. We prefer that if you like to use toothpaste, that you brush your tongue with it and use minimal amounts on the teeth.

Topical fluoride helps reduce tooth decay and is a desirable additive to toothpaste. We recommend prescription strength toothpaste such as Prevident for people who want the best protection. We also recommend fluoride mouth rinses. Anytime a fluoride product is used, they are most effective to use after the plaque has been adequately removed from the teeth. It is beneficial not to eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after using fluoride products. We do not recommend any alcohol containing rinses as there may be no benefit for their use. Alcohol has a dehydrating effect and actually can increase halitosis (bad breath).

Too much toothpaste can be harmful to bonded restorations and cause premature replacement. Tartar control toothpaste can cause hypersensitivity of the teeth.

Ideally, we would like our patients to use fluoride rinses, soft toothbrushes (electric is ok), and floss daily. We welcome your questions and will provide personalized home care instructions for each patient. For flossing instructions, visit: ADA
