Whitening

Many options are available for tooth whitening.  In our more than 25 years of practice, we have tried various systems and have observed patients using various store bought products.  We have observed that the most effective whitening method is to provide customized trays with solutions to be used at home. The dental literature supports the following information generated by independent researchers and those who were not financed by commercial corporate entities.

Effective whitening of teeth occurs when hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (which turns into hydrogen peroxide) is applied to the teeth. The hydrogen peroxide should be provided in a viscous pH balanced solution.  Repeated applications of shorter duration over an extended period of time provide a more thorough whitening. Lights and lasers do not effectively accelerate the solutions.

Many of the “in-office” products that claim to be accelerated by lights and lasers contain dehydrating agents.  Dehydration of teeth causes pain.  Dehydration whitening of teeth occurs simply by leaving your mouth open and not allowing the teeth to get wet. In-office systems of so-called whitening are actually very temporary and the patient is usually instructed to use at home products after the very costly in-office procedure.
